LOVE IT

I am in training for a Marathon, and have loved having the Forerunner as a guide along the way! Being able to check my pace, splits, etc has been an invaluable tool for preparing for the long run! Be sure to make sure it is charged before a REALLY long run...I went out for 24 miles last weekend with "6 hours of battery life" left on the watch, but it died at about 4 hours...So I guess it wasn't 6 hours of continuous use. No biggie, I was almost done, and it was my fault I hadn't charged it. LOVE that I don't have to replace batteries! I use it during races and every run I go on--it keeps excellent track of run history! I also used it while hiking in the mountains and the navigation was a great tool, as it left "cookie crumbs" to get us back to our car. I haven't even begun to use all its features! Buy it! You won't regret it!

Forerunner vs Timex
Perry  Wisconsin  7/27/2004

I've always been interested in the gadgets that would help me measure exactly how far I had run and gave me an idea on whether I was actually getting any better. Last year I managed to get hold of the Timex Speed and Distance GPS watch and have been running pretty regularly with it since Summer. Then this Spring, I bought a Garmin Forerunner 201 as a replacement. The Garmin has plenty of advantages on paper when compared to the Timex. But how do they both compare when you actually run with them. As the GPS part of the Timex is also 'made by Garmin' the distance measuring is equally good in both devices. The Forerunner seems able to get a sattelite fix quicker than the Timex - but the difference is not really that marked.
Note that the Timex consists of the GPS module that you have to strap to your upper arm and of the watch that receives and displays the data. The Garmin is an all in one device where the GPS module is integrated. When it comes to weight - there is a large difference: The Forerunner weighs in at 0.078 Kgs and the Timex combo at 0.228 Kgs. So, what do I want from a GPS running gadget - well here's my list:
Easy to operate and read while running (Forerunner 201)
Light in weight and doesn't get in the way (Forerunner 201)
Distance measuring (both)
History of distances run (so I don't have to write my runs down) (Forerunner 201)
Ok, any owners of the Forerunner will be seeing where this is going and indeed, the Forerunner beats the socks off the Timex.
Here are the points that really make it stand out:
It's small, light and all-in-one.
The display is big and easy to read.
It stores all my runs for me.

A "novel feature" of the Garmin is the virtual running partner. This function allows you to run against a "shadow" partner - preset with a certain pace and distance. The Garmin will then tell you whether you are ahead or behind your partner as you run.
The Forerunner also offers more traditional GPS functionality (mapping, waypoints, trail etc.) One neat feature is that the Forerunner will draw a map of your run on the screen - you can then overlay it onto a proper map.

Thanks for the prompt service!
