If you have a fast-paced trail race coming up, especially one with a lot of climbing, the Flyroc 310 is an excellent choice. With its fly-weight, flexible racing-flat feel, and superb traction, this shoe is something that any nimble-footed trail speedster should try. The fit is snug from heel to toe, with a narrow, very flexible midsole over an outsole that means business. They aren’t for anyone who needs motion control, or for running many road miles due to the minimalist cushioning, but they weren’t designed for that anyway. Our testers said that these speed demons even felt funny when walking, but when on rugged, muddy or sandy trails, it was hard to hold back from full throttle-running, which is how we recommend you use them—in races or fast-paced runs over very rugged terrain. Inov-8’s Mudroc 280 (not pictured) is similar in fit, with an even narrower heel that is convex (rounded up on the edges) to handle uneven surfaces, a deep, open tread pattern to handle mud and loose terrain, and a racing feel.
